Independent Study through Correspondence:

University :: Introduction & General Information

Admission

Admission to the University of Arizona is not required for students registering for UA Correspondence courses.

Current University of Arizona students: The advisor of your college must sign the University Correspondence registration form before registering. (UA Fine Arts students are not required to obtain an advisor signature.) Under no circumstances will a UA student be registered for a credit correspondence course without this signature.

Students with past-due debts to the University of Arizona: You are considered financially ineligible to register until outstanding debts are paid in full. A degree or diploma will not be issued to any student whose records indicate indebtedness to the University. All refunds and/or deposits that may be due a student will be first applied to encumbrances owed the University.

If you are not currently attending the University of Arizona due to reasons pertaining to “not in good standing,” you need to check with the Dean of your prior college before registering for a course through correspondence.

Prospective students from other colleges or universities: You are responsible for obtaining any authorization required from your institution before you register for a UA credit correspondence course.

All credit earned by correspondence is held in reserve until you enroll in a degree program with the University or until you request that your accumulated credit be transferred to another institution.

Fees and Refund Policies

Withdrawal and Drop/Add
A student must withdraw from a course within 30 days of registration to be eligible for a partial refund. If you want to withdraw or drop and/or add classes, you must do so in writing within 30 days of registration. There is a fee charged for a withdrawal and drop/add. The transfer from one course to another is considered the same as drop/add and can only be done when no assignments have been submitted or, in the case of directed study courses, no exam has been taken. Transfer of registration from one student to another is not permitted.

Be Positive Before You Register
Before you register for a course, be certain it’s what you need. If you change your mind and the registration has been processed, a withdrawal fee will be deducted.

Be Positive Before You Drop a Course
Once you drop a course, it cannot be reactivated. If you change your mind, you will need to register and pay the full tuition price again.

Other Fees
1. Withdrawal fee: $70
2. One-time extension fee: $40
3. Change-of-course processing fee: $40
4. Replacement of lost syllabus: $20, plus $5 for mailing (Does not apply to online courses).

Returned Check Charges

Checks that are returned marked “insufficient funds” will incur a $25 charge. This charge must be paid by money order, cashier’s check, bank draft, or credit card. No assignments can be accepted, nor can grades be released, unless a student’s financial accounts are in order.

Discontinued Courses

Sometimes courses are discontinued, either temporarily or permanently. Registration fees received for unavailable courses will be refunded in full or, if requested, transferred free of charge to another correspondence course with equal tuition.

Textbooks

Textbooks should be ordered from the UA BookStores Correspondence section, but can also be purchased wherever available. Be sure to buy the correct edition as listed in the course syllabus. You can order by mail using the book order form, unless noted otherwise in the course description of this catalog. However, some textbooks can be purchased from the Correspondence Office. Payment for textbooks is made directly to the UA BookStores. Since textbook prices and editions can change at any time, please call the UA BookStores Correspondence section at 520-621-2811 or 800-937-8632 before you mail your order. This will help prevent delays in receiving your books.

The UA Correspondence Office will not guarantee or take any responsibility for securing needed books unless you buy them from the UA BookStores Correspondence section within 30 days of registering for your course.

You can also order books from the UA BookStores Internet site (www.uofabookstores.com/uaz). Refer to the site’s section on Correspondence, which includes textbooks for middle school, high school, and university courses. Orders can be paid by American Express, MasterCard, Visa, or Discover. If you prefer, you can download the form, print it out, and mail it to the bookstore.

Enrolling in Graduate-Level Courses

When enrolling in a graduate-level course you will be required to submit the Application for Graduate Non-Degree Admission to the UA Graduate College. There is a $25 charge for the processing of the Graduate Application and it is paid separately from the Correspondence course tuition. The Graduate Application process takes about 7-10 days. (You must have a minimum four-year baccalaureate degree, or one considered comparable to the U.S. baccalaureate degree to take a course for graduate credit.) Once the application process is completed, the Correspondence Office will process your Correspondence registration and mail you the course syllabus. If you do not currently meet this degree requirement, you can register to take the course for personal/professional development. This office will mail you the required forms upon request.

Lower-Division, Upper-Division, and Graduate Courses

University courses numbered 100 to 299 are lower-division courses. Courses numbered 300 to 499 are upper-division courses and graduate level courses are numbered 500 and above.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites are listed for certain courses. This listing is intended to help you select your courses. Courses with sequential numbers must be taken in order; they cannot be taken concurrently unless otherwise noted.

Credit

Credit is granted in semester hours or units. The number of units awarded for each class is listed in parentheses after the course title. Some UA courses that carry four or five units of credit are divided into two separate courses when offered through correspondence study. A maximum of 60 semester hours of correspondence study may be applied to an undergraduate degree at the University of Arizona. Grades earned through correspondence study are not averaged into a student’s cumulative grade-point average. Check the policy at your college or university. Credit earned through UA Correspondence courses may not be used to meet Arizona residency requirements or to fulfill full-time student status. There is no pass/fail option in correspondence. You will receive a letter grade.

Transfer of Credit

The transfer of credit from one institution to another is always optional with the institution to which the credit is being transferred. A student who plans to transfer credit should determine whether this can be done before enrolling.

Definition of a Unit of Credit

The University of Arizona awards credit according to the Arizona Board of Regents’ definition of a unit of credit. This definition is the same definition accepted by all institutions of higher education which offer academic degree programs recognized for high standards of quality and rigor.

Definition of a Unit of Credit: An hour of work is the equivalent of 50 minutes of class time (often called a “contact hour”) or 60 minutes of independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work – at least 15 contact hours of recitation, lecture, discussion, testing or evaluation, seminar, or colloquium, as well as a minimum of 30 hours of student homework – by each student is required for each unit of credit. Ordinarily, a course must cover a one-week period for every unit of credit given. During summer sessions, however, six units of credit may be given over a five-week period

Independent Study Catalog

Independent Study Catalog, a directory published by Peterson’s, may help you locate courses and programs not available through the UA Correspondence program. The catalog, available at most public libraries and online at www.petersons.com, also lists graduate-level correspondence and independent study courses.

Honor System

Students registering for any credit course are subject to the principles and procedures of the University of Arizona’s Code of Academic Integrity. The Code places full responsibility on the student for the content and integrity of all academic work, whether submitted as homework or exams. For additional information, consult the University of Arizona General Catalog (catalog.arizona.edu) or the Code of Academic Integrity (http://dos.web.arizona.edu/uapolicies/).

Dishonesty of any kind with respect to lessons, examinations, or alteration of records can result in forfeiture of all fees, a failing grade and/or denial of course credit.

Assignments

We encourage you to make a copy of assignments sent to your instructor. It’s much easier to mail another copy of a long assignment than to redo one lost in the mail. The UA Correspondence Office is not responsible for lost mail. No credit will be issued to the student unless the instructor has received all assignments and exams. Assignments may not be resubmitted for a better grade. All course requirements must be completed and received by the instructor before taking the final exam.

Now you can submit assignments for many of our courses or make instructor contact by e-mail or fax. Look for these symbols – Email Option Icon(e-mail) and Fax Option Icon(fax) – to see which courses offer these options.

Exams

You may take exams at the University of Arizona Correspondence Testing Center, University Services Building, Room 321, 888 North Euclid Avenue, Tucson. Call 520-626-4229 to schedule an appointment.

Please set up your appointment at least 48 hours in advance. At graduation time, however, we recommend that you schedule at least one week in advance.

If you live outside of Tucson, or if the Testing Center hours are not convenient, you may use the Request-a-Test form in the syllabus. This form lists approved testing locations and proctors.

Graded exams cannot be returned.

Lost Exams

Although rare, there are occasions when a mailed exam gets lost. If an exam is lost in the mail before the instructor has received it, an alternate exam will have to be taken. No final grade can be issued unless all assignments and exams are completed and graded.

Reexaminations

A student who does poorly or fails any of the exams for a university-level course will not be allowed to retake the exam under any circumstances.

Attention UA Students

If you are graduating from the UA in May, August, or December of the current year, it is strongly suggested that you complete all course requirements, including your correspondence final exam, at least three weeks prior to the on-campus deadline dates.

Financial Aid

Financial aid is not available through the UA Correspondence program.

Completion Time

You have nine months from the date of registration to complete a course. If you haven’t completed the course after nine months, you may receive a one-time, three-month extension for a $40 fee. However, all course requirements must be completed before the one-year expiration date; otherwise, due to registration policies, a grade cannot be posted.

Only one extension is granted. Under no circumstances will a course be kept active after the one-year date.

A few courses have specific start and end dates. This information is noted in the course descriptions.

Minimum Completion Time

A student is not permitted to take an exam for any course in less than 20 days from the date of registration. For a one-unit course having more than one exam, the first exam may not be taken until you have been registered in the course for 20 days. A student is not permitted to take the final exam for a course in less than 20 days from the date of registration for a one-unit course; 40 days for a two-unit course; and 60 days for a three-, four-, or five-unit course. A written request from the advisor or dean of the college in which the student is enrolled must be provided for this requirement to be waived. Permission is also needed from the instructor of the course. Under no circumstances will a student be permitted to complete a two- or three-credit course in fewer than 30 days from the date of registration. A one-unit course may not be completed in fewer than 20 days. No exceptions will be made in the case of a one-unit course. In courses that have more than one exam, you may not take the next exam until you receive the results of the prior exam. Contact the testing coordinator for further clarification.

Assistance for Handicapped Students

The UA Outreach College is committed to making its programs and services accessible to all students, and works closely with the University’s Disability Resource Center in responding to access concerns.

Persons with disabilities may request reasonable accommodations by calling our office at 520-626-4222 (V) or 800-772-7480 (V) or 520-626-8550 (TTY). Requests for reasonable accommodations should be made prior to registering to allow for coordination time; we will attempt to fill all requests, but accommodation cannot be guaranteed when requests are received with little advance notice.

Deadlines

During holidays, semester breaks, and the summer, instructors on vacation are not replaced with a substitute unless they will be absent for a prolonged period. Since their absence can affect your schedule, you should allow extra time to finish during these periods.

Transcripts

The UA Correspondence Office does not issue transcripts. Transcripts must be requested in writing from the Transcript Desk, Registrar’s Office, The University of Arizona, P.O. Box 210066, Tucson, AZ 85721-0066.

Call 520-621-3113 for recorded instructions or look online at www.registrar.arizona.edu/. The UA Transcript Request Form is available online at www.registrar.arizona.edu/forms/Transcript_Request.pdf.

When requesting transcripts, please indicate that they are for Correspondence courses.

Faxes

You can fax your registration form as long as it has the necessary signatures. Under certain conditions, we will fax selected documents on request. The cost is: in-state students, $10; out-of-state students, $15; overseas students, $20. Due to volume, most lessons cannot be sent or received by fax. (Those courses offering the option of faxing assignments to the instructor are identified by this symbol: Fax Option Icon

If extenuating circumstances are involved, contact this office in advance to discuss possible arrangements.
